HISTORY

The Church of Santa Maria di Montevergine The Church of Santa Maria di Montevergine was founded in 1684 by the family Mattera During the 700 was often kept by hermits.
The small church it houses many interesting works.
Entering the temple, placed in a niche on the left wall, you can appreciate the polychrome wooden sculpture of St. Vincent Ferrer, made by an arista active field in the nineteenth century. The saint is depicted with the distinctive Dominican habit, with his left hand holding a book (symbol of wisdom) while his right hand is stretched out authoritatively up.
In the sacristy are kept a wooden statue of the Immaculate crushing the serpent and paintings by unknown artists active between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In particular, you can enjoy a view of San Francesco di Paola with the Virgin (A classic product to a popular character in the line of votive offerings), a Vision of St. John Joseph and a picture of Saint Lucia, represented with the characteristic blue coat and the classic hallmarks of his martyrdom: a glass eye in his right hand and the left palm.
The main altar dates from the nineteenth century. It has two hanger brackets, decorated with scrolls framing a covering of the front wall decorated with a cross made central ray.
At the bottom of the altar and pillars are elegant pair of cherubs.
On the back wall of the apse you can admire the most significant work between those preserved in the church: an oil on canvas depicting the Holy Mary with St. Nicholas and St. Anthony. Lacchese is supported by the appearance of the letters, comparable to those of other saints made by the artist in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Ischia Ponte.
The painting has long been stifled by extensive repainting on the throne and on the mantle of the Virgin, affixed a plaque to the warning below, in 1897 by a sculptor named Hierdis.
