Happy New Year was one of the first songs to be completed for the new album Super Trouper. It was written in Barbados in January 1980, Agnetha and Frida were involved in the recording of the album dedicated to the English-American market Gracias por la music.

The working title of this song was: Daddy, do not get drunk on Christmas day (Dad, do not get drunk on Christmas Day) and was part of a project for a musical set in a New Year's Eve.
